Yuji Itadori (Shueisha)

Gege Akutami comes back to finish his heralded manga Jujustu Kaisen with an epilogue meant for the final volume. Thanks to the internet we were able to get our hands on it early. This 16-page final chapter left me with more questions than answers. I dare say this might be Gege’s most ambiguous work yet.

The chapter follows four main characters: Yuko, Panda, Nobara, and Uraume. If you’re anything like me, you were initially surprised by these choices. Then you quickly remembered the type of person Gege is and thought, ‘Yeah, that checks out.’

It starts with a flashback of Yuko talking to Yuji on a snowy day. Yuko is the girl who had a crush on him. I know you were clueless, it’s okay.

Yuko went to their hometown to take care of her grandmother’s house, and then she runs into Yuji who went home to take care of his grandfather’s house. They chat for a while. Yuko stares at the love of her life, and that’s it. The scene abruptly ends. Nobara simply comments that Yuji is close to being an adult, and that’s all. If you’re looking for definitive answers, you won’t find them here, so turn back now.

Panda’s story was unexpected. It’s a flash forward from the present day about 60 years into the future. He’s still a baby and he’s being handled by two kids who are revealed to be Yuta’s grandchildren. It’s explained that he stopped functioning in 2035 and was registered in the Gojo family’s storage. Yuta is his owner and head of the Gojo clan.

We do know that Yuta did not die a virgin. The burning question on everyone’s mind is: did he end up with Maki? Why couldn’t Gege just give us a definitive answer?

Nobara’s story follows. In my opinion, it was the least engaging of the four. She has a conversation with her deadbeat mother, who has no regrets. Her grandmother appears at the end. Honestly, this segment felt underwhelming. It might have been more impactful if Nobara hadn’t been sidelined for such a significant portion of the series.

Uraume’s story concludes the chapter, and it’s my personal favorite. We finally learn about how Sukuna met him. Unlike other sorcerers, Uraume possessed an uncontrollable power that accidentally led to the freezing deaths of his parents. This is a unique aspect of JJK. The series rarely depicts the initial discovery of sorcerers’ powers, and there are no other instances of individuals inadvertently killing someone or activating techniques unintentionally, which I believe would be more common occurrences.

Sukuna takes in Uraume and we see him act like a father in his own rude, Sukuna way. Uraume can preserve food with his ice, and he was a good cook, so Sukuna asked him to be his personal chef. How sweet.

At the end Uraume asks him why he doesn’t get cold by his side and Sukuna laughs and asks the same question in reverse. Then they walk off holding hands.

This is easily one of the most heartwarming moments in the series and it’s ironic because it came from some of the coldest characters in the verse.

If I knew I was going to experience such heartfelt moments, I would have anticipated a Yuta/Maki wedding or a Megumi/Hana storyline. I wasn’t expecting a touching Sukuna story, but I’m glad it was included. It made reading the rest of the epilogue worthwhile.
