Chainsaw Man 195 left off on a community-splitting cliffhanger: Is the new girl the Death Devil, the Control Devil, or someone else entirely?

Chainsaw Man 196 did nothing to clear up that mystery. The new girl confused readers just as much as she confused the class of students she joined.

CSM fans will just have to cry erratically and bite their fingers, just like the new girl did for most of the chapter.

CSM 196 Overview:

  • First, the new girl says she feels bad for the students.
  • A student asks her if she would help with the school festival.
  • She’s willing to help if it will “save them.”
  • The student asks her to take out the trash.

What happens next is the most confusing part of the chapter. The girl points at the student and says they should take out the trash. Then, they actually pick up the trash and take it out. This may sound like nothing, but if you remember, the Control Devil operates in that exact way.

  • Another student calls the new girl a freak and tells her to go outside and crush ants.
  • The boy who took out the trash comes back and explains to the new girl that everyone is going through a lot right now.
  • He tells her that just a smile would save them.

The new girl then puts her hands on the boy’s face and says, “Through death, I’ll release you from your earthly suffering.”

Then, interrupting them, an imposter Chainsaw Man jumps from atop a building and lands nearby, spouting nonsense about justice and coming from hell.

As if this girl’s identity wasn’t confusing enough, here comes a veiny, grotesque Chainsaw Man impersonator.
