What Happened In Ichi the Witch Volume 3
Ichi the Witch Volume 3 covers chapters 17–25. Volume 3 picks up right where Volume 2 left off.
The Fight Against the World-Hater Majik
Ichi launches a King Majik-charged Hisame Majik ice-shark barrage at the World-Hater Majik (done putting Majik after everything).
While Kumugi is jotting down every detail of the scene, Hisame connects with the World-Hater Majik. He and his death marchers are temporarily frozen, which causes short-lived excitement from the villagers until he breaks free from the ice unscathed.
He pulls Ichi to him using telekinesis (an unexplained power). Ichi then surprises him with a stab to the neck, which doesn’t damage him. Ichi falls unconscious due to using Uroro’s magic. World-Hater starts to warp Ichi before he is saved by Desscaras.
Desscaras envelops Ichi in a bubble, then begins her battle with WH (World-Hater Majik). She asks him about a mountain he warped out 15 years ago, which he doesn’t remember. She uses a Majik named Golconda, which makes the target answer her questions. WH warps it immediately. Desscaras then goes on to fight WH with her seemingly endless amount of Majiks.
While this fight is happening, Ichi is inside his magic circle, as explained by Uroro. The magic circle is a witch’s inner world where their acquired Majiks stay. Because Ichi is knocked out, this is where he resides for the time being. Somehow, in this world, Ichi is able to see the events of the outside world.
Togeice shows up to aid Desscaras, who is ragged from stalling WH. With reinforcements on the way and the villagers evacuated, WH hops into a portal and leaves. He explains that his purpose is simple: to destroy the whole world. He also says he will return very soon. Ichi swears he will hunt WH.
The Oracle Witch Jikishirone Meets Ichi
Uroro warns Ichi that he will be a sacrifice and “she” has a duty to explain that to him. Ichi wakes up bandaged with Kumugi at his bedside. Desscaras greets Ichi and explains that the region around Hoitaka village was half-wrecked. Despite that, the village itself is fine and no one was killed.
She then introduces him to the Oracle Witch—a Majik that possessed a girl who was in a coma. That Majik is the prophecy Majik, whose name is self-explanatory.
She details that one day in the past, she received a prophecy that WH would warp the world and effectively end it. However, the one chance the world had to live was through the person who acquired Uroro. That person could defeat WH, but they would most certainly die in the process.

Ichi is shocked by this fate but then accepts it as the best-case scenario for a hunter. Desscaras is visibly angry about the situation.
Oracle explains to Monigold that her prophecy has changed since the first epiphany. Before, it was that the one who acquired Uroro could acquire WH too. Death was not included. Monigold ordered Desscaras to tell Ichi as soon as he woke up. The only people who know this prophecy are Monigold, Desscaras, the Analytic Witch, Oracle, and Ichi himself.
Desscaras and Ichi’s Mentor-Pupil Blood Contract
Desscaras is getting drunk at a bar when Togeice approaches her. Togeice admits that she’s concerned about Desscaras. The more time Desscaras spends with Ichi, the more he may remind her of her little brother Libro, who was presumably killed by the WH. Toge offers to watch over Ichi anytime if it ever becomes too much to bear.
Desscaras finishes her bottle of wine and sits Ichi down. She asks him if he’s really okay with being a martyr. He only knows how to live for today and has a hard time thinking about his future, so the possibility of dying in a hunt doesn’t bother him. Desscaras abruptly asks Ichi to be her family.
She says that she took Ichi away from his mountain home and is having him fight monsters as a witch. It’s her responsibility to provide him with a home—a place he can always come back to. She has him sign a Mentor-Pupil Blood contract.
Ichi briefly remembers being abandoned on the mountain with nothing but a knife. He’s excited to have a family. Desscaras then gives him a list of chores to do because the contract is basically a slave document. The pupil cannot refuse their mentor’s command. If the pupil dies, then the mentor will die as well. Desscaras refuses to force Ichi to shoulder the burden of capturing WH alone.
Trip to the Country of Bakugami
The next morning, the gang (Ichi, Desscaras, and Kumugi) receive a prophecy that they should go to Bakugami and acquire the Majik that slumbers there. Should they capture the sleeping Majik, they will receive a “stalwart companion.” Kumugi doesn’t know about the blood contract.
While looking for the Origumo Majik, the gang stumbles upon GokuRaku The Brutalizer. He’s an infamous brute that challenges Majiks, beats them up, and then leaves without acquiring them. He’s on the official dangerous persons list. Ichi interrupts his bullying of Origumo and acquires the Majik. GokuRaku, impressed that Ichi is a male witch, picks Ichi up and runs away. Desscaras attempts to cage them, but Goku escapes twice.
Covered in goat poop and carrying a freshly severed goat head, Goku jumps into a river to wash himself and Ichi up. During their bath, Ichi notices minerals running down Goku’s spine. He explains that he used magic items to augment his body so he can touch Majiks as a man, because there’s a particular Majik he wants to hurt. Ichi shows Goku his hunting skills while explaining to him how he became a witch. Goku attempted to eat Uroro because he thought it might make him a witch. Uroro just reappears. While Ichi sleeps, Uroro asks Goku to kill Ichi, and in return, he’d make him a witch.
Goku doesn’t fall for the bait and instead blasts Uroro away. He gets triggered and starts thinking about that particular Majik he hates. The noise wakes up Ichi, who asks him who that Majik is.
At the same time, Kumugi and Desscaras arrive at Bakugami, where they are greeted by a resident who was expecting them. Desscaras questions if Origumo was the Majik from the prophecy since they weren’t slumbering nor bothering Bakugami. The guide introduces them to “Lord Bakugami”, a peaceful Majik that grants humans joy.
According to their guide, Bakugami saved the people from suffering deep within the earth. If a witch tried to acquire them, they would be executed for attempting to harm the slumber Majik.
Goku reveals to Ichi that Bakugami is the Majik he despises and that they aren’t as peaceful as people think. He asks Ichi to help him acquire Bakugami, even if it makes an enemy of an entire country.
Inside Bakugami is a humanoid creature who is praying to a picture of WH, hoping to earn his praise by massacring the whole country.
Ichi the Witch Volume 3 Review
I’d say I’m officially hooked on this story. Osamu Nishi is doing a great job building the story and raising the stakes. Shiro Usazaki is depicting it beautifully.
World-Hater Majik’s effect on the tone of Ichi the Witch
I was worried that the world wasn’t going to be serious enough to hold my attention because the first three Majiks were unserious. The addition of the World Hater Majik has raised the stakes. Even though there were zero casualties from the warping he did near Hoitaka village, he was still menacing. His warping is grotesque, he’s rarely bothered, and he can even kill Majiks, making him both feared and worshipped by them.
Desscaras Becomes Motherly
Then, to connect him to Desscaras by heavily implying that he was the one that killed her little brother was the cherry on top. Desscaras is having the evolution of her character that I was hoping for. She’s gone from just a cocky and easygoing person to a protective, motherly figure to Ichi. She showed why she’s the strongest witch when fighting WH with her extensive collection of Majiks that even he was concerned by. She has revenge driving her to hunt. She’s taking extreme responsibility for putting Ichi in harm’s way. There isn’t much more I could ask for from her character at this current stage.
Ichi Has a Family
Ichi is also changing in a way I find interesting. His rationalization of his impending death doesn’t surprise me. He’s stated many times that he’s a hunter, that’s all he lives for, and he accepts he could always die in any hunt. What surprised me is how hard Desscaras took Ichi not being concerned for his own future. Her determination to show him he should think about his future excites me. I’d love to see someone who’s so one-tracked blossom into a well-rounded person.
He was visibly happy to finally have a family after being left alone for so long. Even after finding out the contract is a curse, he still asked Kumugi to be his family. He’s never had someone to tell him what’s good for him, so how could he ever know? The girls from the village near the mountain where he lived asked him to move to their village, but he declined. He’s never had to answer to authority, so he’s always chosen what he knows: loneliness.
Gokuraku Joins Ichi
Gokuraku is an interesting addition to the cast. He seems to be another character out for revenge. I don’t think he will ever become a witch based on the fact that Ichi is the first ever male witch, but his strength is useful for stalling Majiks. I want to know what the slumbering Majik did to him.
Togeice Has a Warmer Side
I gained a lot of respect for Monigold and Togeice. Togeice was a complete stickler in Volume 2 but showed her soft side at the bar with Desscaras. Before, they just came off as rivals, but we get to learn that they actually care for each other. They may not see eye to eye when it comes to witchcraft, but they’re friends. Monigold scolded Desscaras like a mother would her child. She ordered her to tell Ichi immediately about the prophecy. I like seeing that human side of the leader of the Mantinel Witches Association.
Kumugi Stalling in Development
Kumugi slept by Ichi when he was knocked out, showing her care for him. Besides that, not much has developed with her since Volume 2, when we learned about her insecurity in her abilities. I hope we get to learn more about her next volume.
Even WH has lore I want to know. Why does he hate the world? How can he teleport? Why does he want to kill everyone? Why is he taking so long to destroy the world?
Volume 3 of Ichi the Witch has been my favorite so far. I’m excited to start Volume 4.
