Kagurabachi 125 starts off with more alleged Mikaboshi history told to us by a nameless researcher trying to pinpoint how they adapted to Datenseki.
The researcher points out:
- The Mikaboshi have tremendous “life force.”
- Their prayers to the Datenseki involved human sacrifice.
- The Soga clan could have falsified all the written history of the Mikaboshi.
Tatara Smelting
Seven hours after Shiba steals the Datenseki from the Sorcery Bureau, Mr. Joji finds Kunishige, Urita, and Shiba smelting. He begs them to stop, but they are already seven hours into the smelting process and have pulverized the Datenseki into fine particles.
Joji warns them that the bureau will catch on to them, so they should give up while they can. He speaks of Chiaki’s prophecy that smelting the Datenseki would result in a catastrophe.
Kunishige is aware of the prophecy and took an approach to the smelting process that would limit the potential explosion to only being a threat to those present in the room.
Urita, who has clones due to multiplication sorcery, explains Kunishige’s special eyes. They have a membrane that covers them. It breaks down like muscle and regenerates stronger than before. Kunishige’s eyes are burned by the heat and then regenerate, strengthening his eyesight.
Kunishige explains that by varying the rate of the rising temperature, they can throw off the rhythm of the Datenseki particles and avoid an explosion. Joji is not convinced by his half-baked reasoning. Urita is not convinced either by the reasoning, but rather by Kunishige’s raw talent as a swordsmith.
Urita warns Joji that the heat has already crossed over 1200 degrees and that if he’s concerned for his life, he should leave now. The first noro (impurities of the smelted steel) are expelled from the smelter. Kunishige says this is just the beginning and it’s time to tame the Gods.

Kagurabachi 125 Breakdown
The Mikaboshi lore leans into the spiritual side of Kagurabachi that I’m itching to know more about. In a past article, I asked, “How and why are enchanted blades anchored through the connection of the wielders and the sword master?” Now I have even more questions:
- What is spirit energy?
- Why does everyone have spirit energy?
- Are there Gods?
- How is Datenseki connected to that God?
- How are human sacrifice and flesh sufficient for wielding Datenseki?
- What about Char’s ability to regenerate seemed important to Sojo’s research?
- Was Sojo on the right track?
- Is any of the info we have on the Mikaboshi real, or is it all Soga clan propaganda?
- Is spirit energy just the byproduct of Datenseki radiation?
The smelting section of the chapter was wordy but exciting nonetheless. Something as pivotal as the creation of the enchanted blades should be dramatic. I remember reading earlier on in the story that Takeru spoke to an actual swordsmith to learn about the craft so he could write about it effectively. I wonder if he revisited that same swordsmith for more inspiration.
Kunishige’s advanced eyesight was explained. That’s not normal at all, so maybe that’s his sorcery. It also doesn’t explain Chihiro’s advanced eyesight. Kunishige has spent most of his life smithing, and the only application of this advanced eyesight has been related to smithing and related materials. Chihiro’s eyesight has helped him copy fighting techniques. The relationship is still weak in my eyes.
Kagurabachi Hiatus
We learned through Twitter that Kagurabachi will be going on a month-long hiatus after Kagurabachi 126 releases. I’m never against mangaka taking breaks, knowing how grueling weekly serialization is on their health. Hopefully, the break is proactive and not reactive to a health issue.
What will I write about in place of Kagurabachi? There’s a couple of stories I wouldn’t mind catching up on.
