What Hasn’t Takeru Told Us About Enchanted Blades and Datenseki?

You can find dozens of articles and videos right now explaining exactly how the Enchanted Blades from Kagurabachi work. But instead of beating a dead horse, I’d like to take the road less traveled.

Here are the three most important things we still don’t know about Enchanted Blades.

1. Why are the properties of Datenseki so variable?

We’ve seen several uses of this material so far, and the results differ widely.

• Enchanted Blades: These come with set abilities, suppress inherited sorcery, and are linked to one another through the soul of the Sword Master.
• Raw Datenseki: This material amplifies a user’s inherited sorcery—sometimes granting entirely new abilities—but it often causes the user to explode.

This leaves us with some massive questions. Why did the Hishaku grunts just get a “buff,” while Tenri Sazanami received a buff plus a new jellyfish sorcery on top of his inherited powers?

Even more confusing is Sojo. Why did he explode instantly? If Datenseki amplifies the spirit energy you already have, and Sojo (theoretically) had none left because he was contracted to Cloud Gouger, what was there to even ignite?

2. Why are Enchanted Blades so much stronger than raw Datenseki?

The Mikaboshi weave Datenseki into their clothing to amplify their power. They are accustomed to its strength and, as far as we know, suffer no side effects.

If that’s the case, how are the Enchanted Blades so much more efficient than raw Datenseki that just six of them could defeat an entire island of Mikaboshi? How did Kunishige create a weapon that utilizes Datenseki more effectively than a clan that has lived with the material for over a thousand years?

3. What do Enchanted Blades have to do with souls?

The fact that all Enchanted Blade users are tethered together by the Shinuchi and the Sword Master is the most mysterious element in Kagurabachi.

It’s an abstract concept with no explanation in sight. Why do the blades require a contract at all? And why is it that if the Sword Master dies, every contracted wielder dies with them?

How did Kunishige—someone who, as far as we know, didn’t even possess sorcery—create such a complex system? How do you “write” these rules into a weapon, and what does that process have to do with traditional swordsmithing? Most importantly, why don’t these “soul rules” apply to raw Datenseki?
