It’s only been 3 weeks since the ending of Gege Akutami’s critically acclaimed Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo story and one week since MAPPA’s explosive conclusion to The Culling Game Part 1.

He’s already excited to come back with a brand-new series. This time it will be a direct sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen. It will pick up right after the tumultuous final battle with Ryomen Sukuna, set between the Jujutsu Kaisen and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo timelines.

He sat down with chief editor of Viz Media Sukumah Bahase for an exclusive interview detailing the new project.

SB: I’m honored to sit down with you sensei.

GA: No, no, the honor is mine.

SB: I’m sure the fans will be excited to be getting more Jujutsu Kaisen. What inspired you to come back to writing so soon after two successful series?

GA: I felt as though the story wasn’t finished. I spent so much time on Jujutsu Kaisen, the late nights sometimes working into the deadline. It felt rushed. Modulo gave me time to just focus on writing thanks to Iwasaki (Yuji). I think I’m ready to build on this world.

SB: Will Iwasaki (Yuji) be returning to draw for this story? His art in Modulo was sensational!

GA: Yes! His assistance will be needed for this next project. I’d be lucky to have him back.

SB: Will this story be set farther in the future or the past?

GA: In the future but not as far, right after the events of Jujutsu Kaisen.

SB: I was looking forward to more Yuka and Tsurugi. Will they make an appearance?

GA: (laughs nervously) You’ll have to wait and see.

SB: There’s been a lot of speculation regarding the “Three Great Vengeful Spirits.” Will the new series finally dive into that lore?

GA: That is actually the backbone of the first arc. I wanted to explore the Heian Era through flashbacks that connect directly to the aftermath of Shinjuku.

SB: Fans have noticed your art style has shifted significantly during Modulo. Will the sequel maintain that gritty look?

GA: We want a blend. Iwasaki’s influence is heavy, but I want to bring back the raw energy from the Hidden Inventory arc.

SB: Have you been reading any manga?

GA: One Piece! I love Oda sensei. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to announce this but we have a collaboration coming soon.

SB: Have you been watching any anime?

GA: Steel Ball Run! It’s amazing how much better it is than Jujutsu Kaisen season 3!

SB: Why doesn’t Megumi appear in Modulo?

GA: My editor asks me this question all the time (laughs frantically). The answer is simple: he’s a bum.

SB: Will Hakari and Uraume ever actually finish their fight, or is that just a permanent background feature now?

GA: They’ve actually started a small catering business together in the corner of the panel. They’re still fighting, but mostly about the seasoning.

SB: Is it true that Sukuna’s next binding vow involves him sacrificing the ability to use a fork?

GA: He’s moved on to spoons. He feels the curved edges provide a more “nuanced” cursed energy output. It’s very technical.

SB: If Gojo were to somehow return, would he still have both his legs?

GA: He returns as a sentient pair of designer pants. Very aerodynamic, very “honored.”

SB: The fans are convinced that there will be a movie for Gojo vs Sukuna. Would you happen to know anything sensei?

GA: I cannot confirm nor deny but… I’ll say one thing… Snyder Cut.

SB: Surely you have a favorite character. Who are your 5 most favorite characters?

GA: Yuta, Maki, Yuka, Tsurugi, and Rika.

SB: It’s teased that Dabura returns to earth for Kyoko. Do they live happily ever after?

GA: Turns out they had nothing in common.

SB: One last question sensei, what day is it?

GA: …
