The Hunt Continues

Ichi The Witch volume 1 ended with the beginning of the hunt for the Hisame Majik. Volume 2 picks up right where it left off.

Hisame Majik

Hisame is the most charismatic Majik yet. She is a giant shark with the power to manipulate ice. Her flying shark familiars freeze anything they bite.

Hisame froze Jauz village and its inhabitants to attract a powerful witch to take her trial. At first she was excited to fight against Desscaras because she’s known as the most powerful witch. To her surprise, it was actually Ichi who challenged her.

Hisame Majik

Hisame’s excitement is unwavering as she explains that her trial is to make her “fabulous.” She’s a Majik that cares more about fashion than killing humans. Her fins have a floral design on them. She wears a necklace on her head with a huge jewel in the center. She wears lipstick. Her eyelashes are luscious and she may even wear eyeliner. She said that she even did her makeup for this showdown.

Hisame’s Trial

Hisame’s trial to make her fabulous has been the most unique Majik trial so far because strength isn’t a factor. Both prior trials involved hunting:

  • Uroro – Must be killed by a man
  • Raiko – Must have his jewel taken

Her trial really showed the danger of being a witch. The task’s completion was 100% subjective. Like she mentioned, she is the judge and the witches are the contestants. It didn’t matter how much they hurt her. The only way she could be captured was by being made “fabulous.” She didn’t provide any criteria either. She simply rejected Kumugi and Desscaras’s ideas. Ichi used what he learned about sushi chefs and culinary presentations from Minakata rather than the usual hunting tactics.

Hisame turned into sashimi

Hisame is blown away by Ichi’s sushi design so much that she cries tears of joy and says she wouldn’t mind going on a date with Ichi. She is the first Majik we’ve seen happy to be captured.

The Mantinel Witches’ Association Conference

Monigold the Aureate Witch holds a conference. Shirabedonna the Analytic Witch explains that Ichi has acquired his 3rd Majik and that is an unfathomable feat even for experienced witches. The association has been keeping Ichi’s existence under wraps in fear of how the world will receive a male witch.

Using the villagers attacked by Hisame as a case study, the Analytic Witch decided that it would be beneficial to publicly disclose Ichi’s existence. It takes more energy to keep him hidden from other witch agencies than it would to reveal him. It would also make the Mantinel Witches famous. Monigold agrees.

Togeice

The majority of the conference seems to agree. The Silver Snow Witch: Chikutoge Togeice opposes. She says Ichi lacks a formal education in witchcraft. She lacks faith in him as a person. She also says Desscaras is irresponsible and that she should be the one to teach Ichi. Desscaras disagrees and says Ichi needs real world practice.

Analytic Witch proposes they have a contest. If Ichi captures a certain Majik first then he continues with Desscaras. If Togeice wins then Ichi will train under her.

Kindake Majik Challenge

The challenge takes place in Hoitaka village. Ichi is explained the rules. He runs into a mysterious robed person. Then they are off to find the mushroom majik. Monigold reflects on Togeice and Desscaras as children. They were always complete opposites.

Kindake Majik hiding

Togeice’s strategy was to freeze the forest until she found Kindake. Ichi, being a mushroom expert, used his intuition to hunt down Kindake. At the deciding point of their competition, Ichi runs away after sensing bloodlust in the other direction. He clashes with the robed person from earlier. They are a Majik and they know Uroro.

God Majik

Monigold calls in and issues a S tier majik warning. 15 years ago this majik appeared and warped out a chunk of a mountain and two towns. They call it the God Majik or the World Hater Majik. Even Uroro is afraid of it. Ichi challenges it proudly. The God Majik warns Uroro to leave or he’ll be erased then he begins his death march.

God Majik

He covered the area in a dome then advances his lancemen which warp everything in their path. Uroro pleads with Ichi to run. Ichi explains how excited he is to hunt a monster so powerful. He uses king magic to amplify hisame magic and create a giant tidal wave of ice sharks spearheaded by one giant shark. The attack connects and the volume ends there.

The Most Interesting Things in Ichi The Witch Volume 2

  • Minakata is mentioned twice. I wonder if he’s still around and who else taught Ichi skills in the mountains.
  • Hisame wanted to be captured but had strict standards about who her captor would be.
  • Togeice’s opinion was enough to challenge everyone else’s.
  • Togeice is who Monigold wants to be the next leader even though Desscaras is the more famous witch.
  • Kindake didn’t hate humans. They thought everyone worshipped mushrooms and that they were actually spreading happiness.
  • God Majik was walking around town before they decided to warp the area. What made them decide this was the place to attack after 15 years? How many other humanoid majiks are there?
  • Majiks were stated to be released back into the world when their owners died but the God Majik seems to be able to even kill Majiks.

Shonen Jump Manga Review Rating

I give Ichi The Witch Volume 2 a 8/10. I enjoyed myself as much as the last volume. I want to know more about Ichi. We know hunting is his motivation but he’s shown signs of caring for people individually. I want to see his personal relationships blossom further. The addition of Togeice is a great foil for Desscaras but I also want to know more about Desscaras. I get that she was rowdy as a child but she seems much more mellow now. Kumugi is also interesting.
